LIBERTY
IS THE POWER OF CHOICE.

FREEDOM OF OPPRESSION IN ALL SOCIAL FORMS,

TO SPEAK.
ACT OR THINK AS ONE
DESIRES.

EACH SELF PORTRAIT REFLECTS ELEMENTS OF OUR HUMAN CONDITION.

THROUGH MOVEMENT I EXPRESS AND USE, MY BODY AS AN INSTRUMENT TO COMMUNICATE.

I MOVE WITHOUT RESTRICTION, JUDGMENT OR LIMITATION WHICH CONTINUES TO OFFER ME ENERGY AND MEANING.

ALLOWING MY BODY TO SPEAK HAS UN-GRIPPED ME FROM GRIEF, AND IS MY ULTIMATE RELEASE.

MY MOTHERS CELEBRATION OF WHO I AM HAS INFLUENCED MY CREATIVE PRACTISE ELEVATING MY CURIOUS NATURE. I RESPOND TO MY EXPERIENCES AND REVISIT MY WORK AS A RESOURCE TO KEEP LEARNING.

THE SKIN WE WALK IN
&
THE MASKS WE WEAR

Exposed and bare
an isoting strength,
beauty behold at peace with oneself.
I, and my body.
The body is a form to which we must self relate
and is the vessel that carries us through life.
The body is the home of the self,
the dwelling of the soul.
Yet it can also be our prison and our burden.
I am revered to my body.
I, and the body.
My photographs emote and question
how women reveal their exposed vessel
within the discomfort of revealed open spaces.
We see a holding grip of one's discomfort,
but an embracing reef of the skin
in which WE walk in.
We shield and protect ourselves
in different ways.
Masks are a blanket of comfort
to hide behind,
armour
to create safety for oneself.
When do you feel you?

THERE’S ONLY YOU  (part one)

Hair as my guard- A symbol of physical strength and instinct.
Our memories are caught and captured, grown from our roots and held in the strands of our hair. A tar black cloak covers my forehead parted like curtains. I pull the drawstring like a rolled
down stocking revealing a part of me I choose to blanket.
My hair holds my history, its length, a timeline of progression and commitment.

Growth, fertility, a symbol of seduction
Movement emerges behind my shoulders
Swaying and flickering my moods.
I pull you over my eyes with
A rope like strength,
My silk shield and armor.
I tip toe forward practicing courage
Unstained from the bruises I gave time to get to know.
I peek behind to watch the knotted past gently untangle,
As a long silver sleeve begins to dissolve.
A tough sensation begins to prance through my veins
As I stand flexible and focused, swallowing the loss in preparation for the repair.

My hair, my DNA, my very own grown tool.
It has bound experiences that have lay locked, contained, closed now exposed.
I throw my head down and touch the tangle as it hangs buoyant, Lusting for the ‘YOU’ that you!
The you hadn’t met yet.
There is you, there is only you.

BETWEEN PAINTERS
‘Between two bodies’

A collaboration by Maya Irving and Lucille Bone

The essence of our collaboration evolved naturally as we began exploring what we discovered to be our shared themes of creating.

Words limit us.

Movement is our predominant language. This collaboration ‘Between Two Bodies’ is to explore the way in which our bodies move together and as one. The space in which we exist together invites our shared themes of playfulness, sensuality and intuition.

As we yielded into the unknown to further understand one another’s mediums, we began giving each other the permission to explore with no rules. We learnt to describe the indescribable and correspond with what was not spoken but understood. The honouring of each other’s practice gifted us to sit in silence and practise patience, noticing what we were both feeling in the moment which led to purposeful unraveling. Emotion, sexuality, touch and embodied knowing. We together have journeyed through an unearthing and spontaneous process which has captured truth within each expressive modality.

These works of collage, painting, photography and movement symbolize the body as the tool which guides and leads our direction as we create together.

NOOKS

A corner offering seclusion and security

Each part moves to form a shape to hold me.

A crevice to retreat to, hide, nest in. My limbs create a safety net, my body is my haven.

My body brings me solace and freedom to be limber, quiet in my aloneness and undisturbed within my inner world of enquiry.

An enclosed hold of intentional intimacy for me and only me. This space is a celebration and undressing for my sensual self to relate intuitively to sex and how I see it and my own pleasure.

My involvement in these images carries a conversation of coyness and curiosity towards my naked autonomy.
